| Most IOM residents travel by car
this being the most convenient form of transport especially
for some of the more remote locations on other Island. Driving
is on the left, road signs are in English, seatbelt law is similar
to that in the UK and it is an offence to use hand-held phones
whilst driving.
Every motor vehicle used or kept on public roads has to be
registered with the Department of Transport. Persons taking
up residence in the Island are required to register and licence
vehicles brought with them onto the Island within 12 months
of their arrival. No driving test is necessary for the holders
of a UK licence, and new residents holding a British, Northern
Island or Channel Island driving licence can exchange it for
a Manx driving licence on payment of a licence fee without
taking a driving test. Car licence duties are considerably
less than the UK and on average a family saloon will cost
£82 per year for road tax.
There is also a frequent and reliable bus service to all
parts of the Island (including special school buses). Buses
operate daily from approximately 7.00 to 23.00 and up to date
timetables and fare information is available from Isle of
Man Transport on Tel 662525. The Isle of Man is also famous
for its railways (steam and electric) most of which were built
for Victorian holiday makers, but still make a vital contribution
to the Island's public transport network.
